New Ideas and Changing Tides

I'm not sure I can speak for all creatives, but for me I tend to get swept up in the changing tide that is my creative ideas. This past week has proven this characteristic to be very true.

Hello and thanks for reading this second post in this series "Starting a freelance music business." In this series I hope you can learn from me as I learn and grow into this dream that I have.

This week was a challenging one. Although my week is really determined by the lens in which I look back on it with. In a negative point of view, it was a tough week. A lot of aspects of current projects have been halted and, frankly, I've been discouraged. But contrarily, the past week was exciting because of the new people I encountered and the new ideas I conjured up. I got to meet one person in particular who has a small studio here in Nashville. We got coffee and I learned about what he does and how he does it. It was really neat to listen and learn from this guy. After meeting this composer and producer, I was left inspired and full of new ideas.

New ideas can be my worst enemy because they end up overtaking my thoughts and actions to the point where it's all I can think about. And this week the new idea was composing music. I studied music composition in college and have composed music in the past, but hadn't thought of it as a career in a very long time. What if I could blend music composition into my music business that I offer? And from that point on the thoughts started to spread like wildfire.

In retrospect, I had already been working on a "music for media" project that was a just-for-fun project. It has actually been so much fun! I'm in the middle of the process and hoping to have it done soon. A good friend of mine, Micah has written and published a comic and I was so intrigued by the overarching story that I took it upon myself to create a video of the comic including narration and "epic" music to set the scene. It has been a blast to write music for! Well, I digress... The spark flared in my mind of offering another service of writing original music for different types of media. My portfolio is limited, but my idea was huge!

So the theme of this post is about my new idea of offering music composition services to clients. My portfolio is almost non-existent for this because almost all of my composition in the past has not been to any type of media. But that hasn't stopped me from thinking I can do it, and do it well. So, my plan at the moment is to compose a number of scores or cues in varying styles to show people what I can do with the tools I have. So, obviously, I am at an amateur level, but I'm confident in my gifts to be able to offer someone something of value. In the coming weeks some of those scores should be popping up on the website here!

I'm not sure how long this new idea will simmer, but I'm excited that it has me creating new music today. It's motivating me and inspiring me and makes me feel like I've accomplished something at the end of the day. I'm so thankful for these gifts God has given me and I'm ecstatic for the ways in which I can use my gifts to create. Thanks again for reading my thoughts and happenings of the week! I truly hope your week is one of inspiration as well!
